John signed for Leeds United as an 18-year-old in 1982 from Manchester City, his hometown club.Over seven years at Elland Road, the midfielder played 230 games and scored 47 goals.
The next stop for John was a trip to the Trent after signing for Nottingham Forest in January 1989.He failed to make any appearances so was released and quickly snapped up by Sheffield Wednesday the same year.
John had a memorable time in Sheffield and famously scored a thunderbolt against Manchester United in the 1991 League Cup Final. He also helped reach the FA Cup Final in 1993 against Arsenal.
Under newly appointed David Pleat,John struggled to get a place in the first team and was loaned out to Birmingham and Bolton Wanderers in 1996,going on to sign for Bolton that same year.
He played 33 times for Bolton and then suprisingly moved to Doncaster in 1998 on non-contract terms. He left the club having played seven games.
It was in the same year he went to France with the Republic of Ireland team for the World Cup.He also scored the 100th goal for the team against Bolivia at Lansdowne Road in 1994.
His last club was Oldham and he spent six years with them, eventually becoming a coach and manager. He spent three years as Oldham boss before a bad string of results saw him sacked in Febraury 2009.He was replaced by former Rovers player Dave Penney.
A few months after leaving Oldham,he became Chesterfield manager. He had a successful time-he earned promotion to League One in April 2011 and then in 2012 The Spirities won the JPT.In spite of this, they were relegated that season.
A poor start to League Two saw John leave Chesterfield after three years. He was then appointed Plymouth Argyle manager in January 2013 until the end of the season. After guiding Argyle to safety,he signed a new deal in Devon to keep him there until 2016.
He now lives in Plymouth. His family home is in Leeds where his wife lives with their three children-Laura(18),Alicia(16) and Michael(13).
