ROVERS LEGEND #10:SIMON MARPLES

Simon didn't turn into a full-time professional until he joined Doncaster in the summer of 1999 and had an enjoyable spell.

Simon was born in Sheffield on 30th July 1975,and grew up near his boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday. It was as a child that he knew he wanted to be a footballer as a result of watching the Owls.

As a teen,he was on the books at Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United, but he joined Stocksbridge in 1994.After an impressive five years,Rovers captured Simon for £12,000 in 1999.

It was a move like no other.Weeks after becoming a Doncaster player, some Premier League clubs were starting to get interested in him.But Simon stayed on and earned promotion in 2003.

He left Doncaster in 2006 on a free transfer after playing 170 games and scoring no goals. His next move was to Chester. He struggled up north and after eighteen months he was placed on gardening leave.

Simon has since retired from football and now lives in Sheffield with his wife Jo and their two sons.
