Doncaster clicked after 13 minutes.A cross from David Cotterill met the head of tall striker Chris Brown who had his effort tipped onto the bar.Just before the break,Rochdale's Matthew Done missed a sitter.
Rochdale started off the second half brighter.Scott Hogan's free kick was met by the left foot of Matt Lund, but the youngster struck the ball straight at Ross Turnbull.
And the Dale cranked even more pressure later on-Ian Henderson put a header wide.
With one minute of time to play,South African Khumalo headed the ball into the net, sending the Dale falling at the first hurdle.

DONCASTER BOSS PAUL DICKOV:
'The clean sheet was impressive.I know that we were expected to thrash Rochdale with them being in League Two but a win is a win-I take that every time'.
ROCHDALE BOSS KEITH HILL
'We were possibly the better of the two sides in all hindsight. We certainly did more than them in the second half'.
