ROVERS LEGEND #18:BRIAN FLYNN

Brian Flynn is definitely a well-known fave around the north of England and Wales for his career as a player and as a successful manager, winning some valuable silverware in the process.

Brian was born in Port Talbot,Wales in 1955.He joined Burnley in 1972 after signing a professional deal.He made his debut for the Clarets as a teenager in an old First Division game in the 1973/74 season.
He made a total of 120 appearances before he signed for Leeds United in what was a dream for the striker in November 1977.He was known to be a key player in the strike force despite only being 5'3".After making over 150 appearances and scoring 11 goals he returned to Burnley in 1982 on a free transfer. Two more years at Turf Moor saw Brian leave for Cardiff City in 1984.
In the later stages of his playing career,he played for Doncaster and made 54 appearances. He then played for Limerick and Bury briefly.
In 1989,Brian began his managerial career aged 33.

He became the manager of Wrexham in March of 1989 with the club in relegation trouble in Division 4.Brian kept them in the league that season and in the 1990/91 season, the Dragons were promoted as champions.

The 1991/92 season saw Wrexham knock out Arsenal from the FA Cup at the Racecourse Ground. They also won the Welsh Cup for two years running.

Flynn's next stop was Europe-Wrexham got into the UEFA Cup qualifiers but lost to Romanians Steuta Bucharest in 1996.

In September 2001,after a brilliant 12 years in the dugout at Wrexham,Brian and his assistant Kevin Reeves resigned from their posts due to poor form.It was a sad day for the club but in hindsight, they needed a change.

Flynn wasn't unemployed for long.A year after leaving Wrexham,he was appointed Division 3(League 2) side Swansea's manager in 2002.At the time,Swansea were in trouble in the league and early signs suggested they'd drop out of the football league.
He signed Roberto Martinez on-loan in January 2003 and winger Jonathon Coates. And it was on the final day of the 2002/03 season,Brian kept Swansea up with an emphatic 4-2 win over Hull at the old Vetch Field. Both sides are now in the top flight-shows how much football can change.

The season after,Swansea were going for the playoffs but a dip in form saw Brian sacked in March 2004.He was offered a return to Wrexham, but due to financial difficulties he turned the offer down.

Later that year,he joined the FAW as the head coach of the Wales U21 side.He gained credit for developing players like Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey into superb midfielders. He even got to be caretaker of the Wales team after John Toshack left the position in 2010.Flynn managed two Euro qualifiers but lost them both.He applied for the job but was unsuccessful.
He left Wales in June 2012 and became a scout for Dean Saunders at Doncaster. When Saunders left Doncaster in January 2013,Brian became manager until the end of the campaign. He will now go down in history as the man who helped Doncaster win the League One title.
Brian decided not to stay on,but became the director of football for Donny.

He lives in North Wales with his wife Liz and they have one child,Michael(born 1980).Michael is a footballer for Newport County.
