Preston North End were formed in 1863 as a cricket club on Deepdale Road.The 'North End' was added when they moved to the North of the City to play at Moor Park.In 1877,they were one of the first ever Football Association clubs to form in England and played their first match under the new rules.Founder Walter Pomfret was owner of the club until he retired in 1920.
The club were successful in the 1880s.They beat Hyde 26-0 in the FA Cup and in 1887/88 they went through the FA Cup without conceding a goal.The last major trophy they won was the FA Cup in 1938.
Local Tom Finney played for Preston from 1946 to 1960,but he never played full-time as he still worked at a plumbing company.With 187 goals in 433 games,he earned 62 caps for England and scored 30 goals.He was made a club president until his death in 2014.
Preston were relegated to the second tier in 1961 and haven't returned to the top
flight since.They were relegated to the Third Division in 1970 but returned back up in 1971.In 1973,Bobby Charlton became manager but they were relegated under him.Preston were promoted in 1978 but suffered back-to-back relegations.They slipped into the bottom tier for the first ever time in their history in 1985.
The 1990s were more successful.John McGrath guided the Lilywhites to the Third Division in 1990.John Beck couldn't save Preston from releagation and was replaced by Gary Peters,his coach.Peters guided Preston back to the third tier but left in 1998,and former player David Moyes replaced him.
Preston won promotion from Division Two as champions.Moyes left for Everton in 2002.Preston never won a promotion again and despite trying,they were relegated under Phil Brown in 2011 back to League One.
THE GAFFER SIMON GRAYSON
Yorkshire-born Grayson,44,was a midfielder before he became a manager.
He came through the ranks at Leeds Utd but failed to make the team,so signed for Leicester in 1992 and made 400 appearances at Filbert Street.He left the club in 1997,and had spells at Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.
After brief loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday,Bradford City,Stockport and Notts County,Grayson signed for Blackpool in 2002 where he became captain.
He retired in 2006 to become Blackpool manager.He led them to successful FA Cup runs and was named Manager of the Month five times.He left Blackpool in December 2008 for Leeds United.
His success at Leeds was beating Manchester United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup and promotion to the Championship in 2010.He left the club in 2012,but soon was appointed manager at Huddersfield where he won promotion via the playoffs.
He was sacked due to poor form by Huddersfield in 2013.Preston appointed him in February that year.
HE PLAYED FOR BOTH IAIN HUME
Canadian Iain Hume signed for Preston in 2011.He had a brief spell at Doncaster in the 2012/13 season,spending time playing under Dean Saunders and then Brian Flynn.
After Preston,he played for Fleetwood Town on loan and helped them win promotion to League One.
