The 40-year-old Norwegian was in the stands at the Emirates on New Year's Day with Cardiff owner Vincent Tan to watch the Bluebirds' 2-0 defeat. He has signed a rolling contract.
The appointment comes after a controversial week which has seen Cardiff's faithful support lash out at Tan's leadership. This has involved appointing unknown scouts and sacking Malky Mackay.Mackay was told by Tan to resign or be sacked, but they agreed the latter could stay on.
However,Tan fired Mackay on Boxing Day and this led to protest by the fans.
Solksjær started his managerial career as the coach of the Manchester United Reserves in 2008,shortly after retiring as a player. He was named the manager of Molde in Norway in 2010 and guided them to consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012.This success caught the attention of Championship club Blackburn Rovers, but he didn't talk to them about vacancies.
At a news conference at the Cardiff City Stadium today, the new manager seemed eager to impress from the start.
"It is a fantastic challenge. Cardiff are ready to take the next step up. I hope I can help them,"he said.
"I have always wanted to come back to the Premier League. I am really looking forward to convincing the Cardiff fans that I am the right man to take them forward."
"I'm a very positive manager," said the Norwegian. "I want to play a good style of football and against Arsenal,we showed what a threat we can be."
Solksjær knows all too well how tough this'll be to keep Cardiff in the league and some big matches.
"We've got some of the toughest trips in world football coming up this month. They're games we'll relish and look forward to,"he explained.
His first game is in the FA Cup against Newcastle.
