Watford formed in 1881 under the name of Watford Rovers.They had several locations across the county for home games and won the County Cup in 1889.In 1890,they moved to a pitch on Cassio Road.Renamed West Hertfordshire in 1893 and having joined the Southern League in 1896,the club became professional.The club became Watford FC in 1898.
Watford won the Southern League in 1915 under Harry Kent.They joined the Football League in 1920/21 and until 1933/34,they were always outside the playoffs at the end of the season.In 1937,Watford won the League Division Three South Cup.
After the Second World War ended,they had a full 1950s as a club and won no trophies.In the 1960s,they went to the FA Cup semi-finals and suffered a lack of funds in 1968.They fell into Division Three in 1972 and were relegated again in 1975.
Singer and pianist Elton John became chairman in 1976,sacking George Kirby and hiring Mike Keen.Graham Taylor followed afterwards and won instant promotion.Promotion to Division Two came in 1978/79 with Ross Jenkins as top scorer.
They qualified for Europe in 1983 with Luther Blissett leaving them for AC Milan.In 1987,Taylor left for Aston Villa.Dave Bassett was named the new boss and he sold John Barnes to Liverpool.He was sacked in March 1988 due to bad form.
The Hornets stayed in Division One in 1988/89.Glenn Roeder was appointed manager in 1993 and they struggled in the 1995/96 season;he was sacked.Te club were relegated back to the second tier with Kenny Jackett as the new boss.
Watford were promoted to the Premier League in 1999 but only lasted one season.Financial crisis struck after Gianluca Vialli became manager and to reduce the wage bill,he was fired in 2002.
Watford returned to the top flight in 2006.They sold Ashley Young and couldn't compete enough,leading them to relegation in 2006/07.In 2010/11,the club saw Malky Mackay leave for Cardiff as manager and he was replaced by coach Sean Dyche.He was sacked in June 2012 by the new owners,Italians the Pozzo family.
Ex-Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola became boss.Watford had scored a record 85 goals and narrowly missed out on automatic promotion.They reached Wembley in similar circumstances to Rovers winning the title at Brentford-Leicester missed a spot kick in the last minute of added time,Watford broke and Troy Deeney scored the winner.They lost in the final to Crystal Palace in 2013.
Form dipped in 2013/14 and Zola left.Guiseppe Sannino was named the new boss.
THE GAFFER-GUISEPPE SANNINO
Italian Sannino hadn't managed in a foreign country prior to joining the Watford setup.
After a thirteen year career as a lower league player,Sannino became a U17 head coach for Vigherese.He became Olterpo manager in 1996 and left after four months.After a spell as a coach at Como,he was named Serie C2's Biellese but was sacked two months later.
After spells at Südtirol,Meda and Sangiovannese in C2,he went on to have poor spells at Varese in 2004 and Cosenza in 2005.After he left Cosenza,he moved to Lombardian side Lecco and earned promotion to Serie C1.He left in May 2007 for Pergocrema and earned a promotion here as well(Serie C2 to Serie C1) and then returned to Varese for the end of the 2010/11 season.
Serie A outfit Siena made him their new manager in 2011.He left in 2012 for Palmero and was sacked in December 2012,only to be rehired in March 2013.He left at the end of the season for Chievo.He lasted four months there.
Watford names him manager in December 2013.
