OPPONENTS GUIDE:BARNSLEY

The highly-anticipated South Yorkshire derby match between Doncaster and Barnsley should be an entertaining relegation fight of a game.

Formed in 1887 by a local church,Barnsley joined the Football League in 1895.They reached the FA Cup Final at Wembley in 1912 but lost 1-0 to West Ham United. They were promoted to the second tier in 1914,shortly before the Great War started.

They were in the old Division Two(and then Division One from 1992) until they won promotion to the top flight in 1997 under Danny Wilson. They were relegated after one season and financial crisis arose in 2002.The club faced relegation to the third tier and were in administration. They were relegated in 2003.

Barnsley were back in the Championship in 2006 under Simon Davey. The 2007/08 saw the Tykes knock Chelsea and Liverpool out of the FA Cup but they lost the semi-final to Cardiff.

In December 2009,Davey was sacked and replaced by ex-Manchester United defender Mark Robins. He left in 2011 and was replaced by Keith Hill.Hill had a good start to management at Oakwell, but a struggle saw him keep the side up on the last day of the season.A poor start to the 2012/13 saw his contract terminated and his assistant David Flircroft took over.He ensured league survival but was sacked in late 2013 due to poor form.

Danny Wilson returned in January 2014 as manager.

THE GAFFER-DANNY WILSON
54-year-old Wilson retuned back to Oakwell in 2014 as a manager of a club he'd gotten into the Premier League.

After he retired as a player,Danny was named Barnsley boss and replaced Viv Anderson in the summer of 1994.He finished mid-table in the 1994/95 season, seventh in 1995/96 and then won promotion to the top flight in 1997.Barnsley were relegated after one season and he was sacked in 1998.

Shortly after,Wilson moved to Sheffield Wednesday. In 1998/99,he led the Owls to 13th in the Premier League but the following season,he was fired with relegation nearing.

In June 2000,he was named Bristol City manager and spent four good years in the west of the country. He resigned in late 2004 over underachieving goals.

Four days after leaving City,he became the second manager of newly-found MK Dons.He saved them from the drop but the following season they were relegated to League Two and he was sacked.

After a spell at Hartlepool United,he became Swindon Town manager. The side made it to the playoff final at Wembley in 2010 but lost to Millwall. He left the club six months later due to poor form.

He was controversially named Sheffield United manager in July 2011.United got off to a good start and they made it to another playoff final-only to lose to Huddersfield on penalties. He was sacked in 2013 due to the impossible task of automatic promotion.

Barnsley re-appointed him in early January of 2014.
